Thoroughbred Aftercare Programme (TAP)

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Programme (TAP) provides everything a rider needs to know when taking on an ex-racehorse.  By signing up for free with The Howden Way you can book into any one of our subsidised regional training sessions which are delivered by our carefully selected Level 3 or above certified coaches as well as access our substantial online resource library.

The programme offers a nationwide support framework to help ensure a smooth transition from racehorse to riding horse for either a competitive or non-competitive second career.

The objectives and purpose of TAP are:

  • To offer a knowledgeable, structured, encouraging and supportive environment for anyone embarking on their journey with an ex-racehorse so that they can do so comfortably and at their own pace;
  • To create a framework and network of support and guidance in which the ex-racehorse, owner and rider can thrive during the retraining process and beyond;
  • To address some common challenges and dispel some popular myths;
  • To raise the profile of thoroughbreds and their suitability as a tangible option for a riding horse in any chosen sphere.

Subsidised training - Expert knowledge and support

Subsidised training - Expert knowledge and support

By simply registering with The Howden Way, those who have taken on an ex-racehorse get access to a comprehensive educational programme that caters for all levels. TAP offers a free online resource and subsidised nationwide training from qualified coaches to help riders better understand their horse and provide a guide through the transitional stages of retraining a racehorse, including lunging, hacking, schooling and, if it is their ambition, to develop skills in a specific discipline prior to competing.

TAP provides the advice and tools for the correct re-training of former racehorses so they can go on to become successful riding horses. Through the provision of its subsidised training programme, TAP aims to ensure ex-racehorses transition into their next career as seamlessly as possible.
